The Sandlot/Rookie Ball

Rookie Ball

  • Who: Players who will be entering Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade for the 2025-26 school year.
  • Great option for players who have already participated in Community Ed T-Ball, have played in the MYB spring K/1st grade Coach Pitch league, or are trying baseball for the first time
  • Boys and Girls welcome!
  • We will be using soft-core baseballs (same as our K/1 Coach Pitch league). These balls are slightly squishy and do not hurt as much if a player is hit by them
  • Older and younger players will not be eligible

  • What: Players can expect instructions and drills for the first portion of each night. The second portion of each night, we will split into teams and play a scrimmage with modified baseball rules, similar to our K/1 coach pitch league. Players will either be hitting off a tee or off coach pitch, to ensure the ball is in play as much as possible. Players will rotate positions. Each night will conclude with a competition for small prizes (candy/seeds/sports drink), such as Golden Glove or a skills competition!

  • Where: OH Anderson Fields 1/2/3

  • When: Monday and Wednesday nights, 6:00-7:00pm. The Sandlot season begins Monday, July 7, 2025 and will conclude Wednesday, August 6.

  • Why: Our spring season overlaps with youth soccer programming and Community Ed T-Ball. We wanted a way for our youngest players, who are still figuring out what they like to do, to have a chance to play a spring sport and still play baseball in the summer
  • We've run our Sandlot program for older kids the last two years to rave reviews. Many people were asking for an option for younger kids to participate in
  • We wanted to replace our outdated "Kindergarten Camp" with something more substantial
  • Our MYB spring season runs approximately 8 weeks in May and June. Each season we get comments from families that there are kids that are looking for more baseball during the summer. While that might not be a fit for every kid/family, we want to offer some fun, "bonus baseball" for kids that are itching for more.

  • Cost: $100/player. This covers your player to come to as many sessions as they like. Each player will also receive a t-shirt as part of their registration.

  • Eligibility: Mahtomedi In-House eligibility requirements apply. Players must live within the district, or be enrolled in a Mahtomedi Public school for the upcoming 2025-26 school year.

The Registration "The Sandlot/Rookie Ball" is not currently available.

The Sandlot

  • Who: Players who will be entering 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade for the 2025-26 school year
  • Players who played on a Travel baseball team in 2025 are NOT eligible
  • Older and younger players will not be eligible.
  • We will be using hardballs, and want to try and ensure players are more evenly matched.
  • Older/younger siblings will not be permitted to "play up" or "play down".

  • What: Players can expect instructions and drills for the first portion of each night. The second portion of each night, we will split into teams and play a scrimmage with regular baseball rules, similar to our 2/3 league. Players will either be hitting off a tee or off coach pitch, to ensure the ball is in play as much as possible. Players will rotate positions. Each night will conclude with a competition for small prizes (candy/seeds/sports drink), such as Golden Glove or Pitcher Knockout.

  • Where: OH Anderson Fields 1/2/3

  • When: Tuesday and Thursday nights, 6:00-7:30pm. The Sandlot season begins Tuesday, July 8, 2025 and will conclude Thursday, August 7.

  • While that might not be a fit for every kid/family, we want to offer some fun, "bonus baseball" for kids that are itching for more. For kids transitioning to our 2/3 league it is a great next step.
  • For 9 & 10yr olds, considering trying out for a travel team in September, it is a great way to stay fresh leading into tryouts.

Going into 2nd grade? You choose!

Players that have completed 1st grade and are going into 2nd grade in the fall 2025-26 school year can choose either Rookie Ball or Sandlot.

Our recommendation - if your player can successfully catch a baseball on almost every throw AND will be playing in our 2/3rd grade Machine Pitch league, they should pick the Sandlot.  We will be using hardballs in the Sandlot.

If your player is still quite nervous about catching a ball and maybe is just doing baseball for the first time this summer, Rookie Ball is a great option. We will be using our soft-core baseballs in Rookie Ball, which are slightly squishy, not as hard and don't hurt as much if you get hit with one.
